Hip pain affects an estimated 10% of the general population, with an even higher prevalence among older adults and athletes. With many possible causes, hip pain can affect you at any point in life, causing discomfort and even disability.
The most common causes of hip pain include:
Osteoarthritis
As the largest weight-bearing joint in the body, the hips undergo significant impact with daily movements. Over time, this can lead to osteoarthritis, also known as “wear and tear” arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint condition that occurs when cartilage within the joints gradually breaks down, causing inflammation, stiffness, and pain.
Hip osteoarthritis affects one in four people by age 85. While there’s no cure, it can be effectively treated with lifestyle changes, pain management, and surgery, in advanced cases.
Although osteoarthritis is the most common, other types of arthritis can also cause hip pain, including rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis.
Injuries
Injuries from sports, car accidents, falls, or overuse can lead to hip pain. Examples include:
- Hip strains, which occur when a hip muscle becomes stretched or torn
- Hip labral tear, which involves damage to the cartilage protecting the hip socket
- Hip fractures, which typically result from a sudden impact to the hip or osteoporosis
- Hip dislocation, which is usually a traumatic injury from a fall, car accident, or contact sports
Bursitis
Bursitis is characterized by inflammation of the bursae (small sacs containing fluid that cushion bones and tissue). If the bursae that cushion the hip joints become swollen, they can trigger sharp, intense hip pain. Pain from hip bursitis typically worsens with prolonged physical activity and at night.
Tendonitis
Tendonitis results from inflamed tendons, usually due to overuse. Hip tendonitis can cause gradual hip pain and tenderness, which worsens without treatment. Thankfully, most cases of tendonitis resolve with rest and conservative treatment.
